Review:Ajeeb Daastaans
Genre:Drama Anthology (4 stories) Duration: 2.22 hours Network:Netflix Released: April 2021
Following the latest trend of anthology in bollywood, comes yet another anthology of four unique twisted short stories revolving around the theme of interpersonal relationships.Out of the four stories, two stories deserve a mention. If not for the stories Geeli Pucchi and Ankahi,I wouldn’t have bothered with this review.
I would recommend skipping the first two and starting from the 3rd story.
Geeli Pucchi
Geeli Pucchi directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, brings to fore the deep rooted caste prejudice that exists even today while also highlighting the struggle of figuring one’s sexual identity.
The story follows the relationship between Priya,a naive Brahmin married data entry operator (Aditi Rao Hydari) struggling with her sexuality and Bharti (Konkona Sen Sharma),a steadfast lesbian assembly line worker, who meet at work.Aditi seeks solace from Bharti, expressing her insecurities. With time their relationship flourishes to a point where Bharati starts developing feelings for Priya.
The turning point in the story comes when Bharti reveals to Priya that she is infact a Dalit, changing the dynamics of their relationship overnight.
The ending scene when Bharati takes a sip from the steel tea cup leaving Priya to her fate is just amazing!
Hi-fi Bharti, you go girl.Revenge is a dish best served cold.
This isn’t your typical feel good story. The restrained performances by the lead characters and their transformations as the story progresses is totally applause worthy. It felt good to watch this one!
Ankahi
Ankhai the last story in this anthology directed by Kayoze Irani is my favorite of the four.
Direction, story, characters, dialogues(sign) are all spot on.Oh,did you know,Kayoze Irani is son of the actor Boman Irani!
I am nothing but praises for this story. You know you have chosen the right cast, when the lead characters in absence of dialogues for most part of the story, effortlessly express complex feelings using their eyes and sign language.
Watch this one for the portrayal of a woman who seeks reassurance, love while trying to build hope for daughter.Natasha (Shefali Shah) is a mother who is desperately trying to get her husband to connect with their daughter who is losing her hearing.
A simple question from her daughter”Will someone love me with my imperfections when dad doesn’t love the perfect you” leads Natasha(Shefali Shah) to question the fragility of her marriage which is marred by constant fights.A chance meeting with hearing impaired Kabir(Manav Kaul) develops into soulful romantic relationship as the two characters express through sign language.
The twist in the end leaves you heartbroken but there couldn’t have been any other ending to this! That’s the complication of life.
The palpable chemistry between Shefali and Manav Kaul is hard to miss!I have loved Shefali Shah since the days of tv series Hasratein, she is one of industry’s finest underrated actors! Her recent Delhi Crime on Netflix is another amazing must watch series.Manav Kaul is marvelous as Kabir,he totally nails it.
Absolutely watch this one!
If you are looking for something light and fun, then watch Yes Day on Netflix. It’s a fun clean family movie.Guaranteed laughs from your kiddos!
