Review:Bombay Begums

Genre:Drama-Series Duration:6 Episodes Network:Netflix Released:March 2021

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

From the director of Lipstick under my Burkha,Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare and the series Made in Heaven comes yet another women oriented drama series of working women who despite being at top of their game never stop looking over their shoulder, for the powerful patriarchal society would devour these women at the slightest sign of vulnerability.

While workplace sexual harassment is at the core of this drama it also brings to fore the boardroom politics, menopause, motherhood, infertility, sexual identity among many others struggles a woman goes through as she tries to strike a balance between her professional and personal life.

Set in Mumbai, the series starts with bold introductions of the begums and a peek into their lives, exposing their insecurities.Strong smart women yet flawed beings who end up taking decisions that are motivated purely by desires and self preservation.Unfortunately the plot doesn’t hold up dragging the story over next 5 episodes.

The numerous love making scenes showcasing the dynamics between the characters are powerful but overshadow the actual intent, making you wonder what exactly was the point of this series?

Rani(Pooja Bhatt) is the newly appointed CEO of a bank grappling with financial crisis who would do anything to stay at top.She appoints the ambitious Fatima(Shahana Goswami)who is at loggerheads with her husband questioning motherhood over her career,to lead her new venture division.Ayesha(Plabita Borthakur) a employee at the bank, homeless, unsure of her sexulality ends up being a victim of a sexual harassment at the hands of a senior bank employee and finally there is Lilly(Amruta Subhash),a sex worker who wants to give her son a fair chance by hook or crook. The story develops around these 4 women as their lives get entwined with each other during the course of the series.

What could have been a witty boardroom drama of power struggle between the genders while exposing the realities of workplace harassment sadly ends up being a soap drama with but an obvious end.Weak dismal direction leaves a lot to desire.

The background voice over narration by Aadhya Anand which ties the four stories together is worth a mention.I would watch the series though for Pooja Bhatt who is brilliant as Rani.

As a always if I had to suggest you an alternative,I would say go watch Made In Heaven on Amazon prime.Alankrita really outdid herself in this series.
