Trails: Coal Creek Falls

Trails: Coal Creek Falls

Let me start by wishing every mother a very “Happy Mother’s Day”.

I woke up to a rather slow Mother’s day celebrations with cute and almost complete cards from the girls! The pace picked up only an hour later, with S whipping up some breakfast and girls *forcefully* wishing me Happy mother’s day at least 10 times😂.

After our first hike to Wallace Falls we were all pumped up.For our second hike of 2021, though I had already decided the trail, last minute we decided to go for shorter trail closer to home.

We got some great suggestions from my ardent hike friend Nidhi and zeroed in on Coal Creek Falls Trail.

About 30 minutes drive from home, Coal Creek Falls trail is located in the Cougar Mountain Regional Wildlife Park,in the city of Bellevue.

A family and pet friendly trail in midst of dense green forest right in the middle of the city makes Coal Creek falls one of the regularly visited trails all year around.

We reached our starting point Sky country trailhead around 11.30am and as expected the parking lot was overflowing with cars.Luckily for us we found a space in the adjoining lot!

Rated moderated, starting from Sky country trailhead Coal Creek falls trails is a 2 mile round trip out and back hike gaining an elevation of 300 ft. The trail starts off with wide gravelled path but soon turns into narrow muddy trail.

Very early in the hike we realized that there are way many different trails and junctions leading you to Coal Creek Falls, and if not carrying a map,one can easily get lost. There are trails that go upto 6 miles.

When confused, we did what other fellow hikers did, follow someone who looked confident of the route they were taking😂.Of course,by now S had already started downloading the map!

The school that girls attend has all the classes named after the evergreen trees found in Pacific Northwest, needless to say I had two very happy girls when they found Douglas Fir and Spruce on the hike.

This trail takes you through old mining region dating back to 1920’s.Due to heavy deforestation you find some very large stumps along the way.I thought they made a great backdrop for pictures.

V for one stuck with me all through the trail because it was Mother’s Day and this was her way of making me feel all special.N was in it for the win,she stuck with whoever was ahead!

The best part of this trail was the delightful melodious euphony of tweets and chirp. They accompanied us all the way to the falls.! Hear it for yourself. V guessed the Chickadee and Robin!

There were many families, moms and little ones out for the hike today celebrating Mother’s Day I guess 😊.

The actual hike takes about an hour with kids in tow.We got wee bit adventurous and ended up hiking the the huge rocks to take a closer look at the falls! Not something I would have tried had it been Fall season,as the flow of the water would be in its full swing!

It started to rain on our way back but we had come prepared, the girls got chance to flaunt their colorful new raincoats.

There is large green patch next to the starting of the trail, while S headed to the lot, girls stopped by to blow at the tufted tops of Dandelions contributing to the pollen season while I happily captured these moments !

I for one enjoyed the hike more than the water falls on this one trail. On a warm wet spring afternoon of Mother’s day we completed the second hike of 2021!

With all that’s going specially back home Coal Creek Falls hike was a refreshing change!
